Summary

James Comey, former FBI Director and bestselling author of A Higher Loyalty, uses his long career in federal law enforcement to explore issues of justice and fairness in the US justice system。

James Comey might best be known as the FBI director that Donald Trump fired in 2017, but he’s had a long, varied career in the law and justice system。 He knows better than most just what a force for good the US justice system can be, and how far afield it has strayed during the Trump Presidency。

In his much-anticipated follow-up to A Higher Loyalty, Comey uses anecdotes and lessons from his career to show how the federal justice system works。 From prosecuting mobsters as an Assistant US Attorney in the Southern District of New York in the 1980s to grappling with the legalities of anti-terrorism work as the Deputy Attorney General in the early 2000s to, of course, his tumultuous stint as FBI director beginning in 2013, Comey shows just how essential it is to pursue the primacy of truth for federal law enforcement。 Saving Justice is gracefully written and honestly told, a clarion call for a return to fairness and equity in the law。

Not as interesting as Higher Loyalty with a few repeated stories。 Not bad but seemed unnecessary。 I really wish he had waited until after the 2020 election。

One of the criticisms I had over Comey's previous book is he didn't really talk about specific cases he interacted with or his career in the private sector。 This book does all of that。 From all the different positions he held in government to the journey along the way he discusses the parts of his life missing from his other book and need for the FBI to maintain it's integrity at all times。 Comey gives several examples of when he could have taken the easy way out of a case by not disclosing an i One of the criticisms I had over Comey's previous book is he didn't really talk about specific cases he interacted with or his career in the private sector。 This book does all of that。 From all the different positions he held in government to the journey along the way he discusses the parts of his life missing from his other book and need for the FBI to maintain it's integrity at all times。 Comey gives several examples of when he could have taken the easy way out of a case by not disclosing an inaccuracy or discrepancy in a case and why the FBI must hold itself to a higher standard when this happens。 Of course there are several chapters about how Trump is tearing all of this down but I enjoyed the book overall。 If you already don't like Comey this will not change your mind but if you had some unanswered questions about his career from the other book this does fill in the gaps。 。。。more

After reading "A Higher Loyalty" I feel I was one of the few people who still respected Comey for his dedication to the truth。 The left hated him for how he treated the Hillary Clinton investigation that essentially handed the election to Trump in 2016。 The right chose to ignore that gift and hate Comey for not bending to Trump's will and for the questionable steps he took to have an independent council named, leading to the investigation into Russian collusion that hampered Trump's entire 4 yea After reading "A Higher Loyalty" I feel I was one of the few people who still respected Comey for his dedication to the truth。 The left hated him for how he treated the Hillary Clinton investigation that essentially handed the election to Trump in 2016。 The right chose to ignore that gift and hate Comey for not bending to Trump's will and for the questionable steps he took to have an independent council named, leading to the investigation into Russian collusion that hampered Trump's entire 4 years in office。 I figured if both sides hated him, he wasn't catering to either one, meaning he was doing what he thought was right no matter how difficult the decision。 In this second book, we get Comey's views on Justice and as much I respect the man and his career, this book felt more like a rehash of his career successes presented under the auspices of how the concept of Justice must be rebuilt after the damage done to the concept during the Trump administration。 I think the book more people would have wanted to read is an examination into how Trump specifically damaged the concept of Justice, because say what you want about Trump, he makes it interesting, and this book needed more than tales of druggie informants and wiretapping Mafia dons to keep the reader engaged while underlining the importance of Justice in today's world。 。。。more

This book was a bit all over the place。 Parts of the book are a memoir, then political, then true crime, and then non-fiction look into government。 It had some interesting parts but I didn't appreciate some of his moral or political views。 Sadly, I can't say what genre this book falls into since it seems to cover so many。 This book would have received more stars if the author would have just stuck with one genre。 If your interested in politics and want to read James Comey side of things then thi This book was a bit all over the place。 Parts of the book are a memoir, then political, then true crime, and then non-fiction look into government。 It had some interesting parts but I didn't appreciate some of his moral or political views。 Sadly, I can't say what genre this book falls into since it seems to cover so many。 This book would have received more stars if the author would have just stuck with one genre。 If your interested in politics and want to read James Comey side of things then this is the book for you。 Otherwise, I would just skip this book completely。 。。。more

Comey has written a book that will keep you interested and wanting more about prosecutors。 The reader can tell that writing is not his vocation but he does an good job keeping the reader engaged with true stories and his take on the justice system in the US。 An easy, informative read。

Solid book, but for someone who follows policy closely it may not be all that stimulating。 Nothing particularly 'wrong' with it, but it did fall a bit flat for me。 I feel like it could easily be compressed into an hour long podcast, or something like that。。。 There just didn't seem to be much meat there。 Not much was added to the conversation。The first 3/4s or so was dedicated largely to his earlier career, and while it was relatively interesting, (prosecuting mafia members, in particular), and s Solid book, but for someone who follows policy closely it may not be all that stimulating。 Nothing particularly 'wrong' with it, but it did fall a bit flat for me。 I feel like it could easily be compressed into an hour long podcast, or something like that。。。 There just didn't seem to be much meat there。 Not much was added to the conversation。The first 3/4s or so was dedicated largely to his earlier career, and while it was relatively interesting, (prosecuting mafia members, in particular), and somewhat paved the way for the latter stages of the book, it certainly wasn't spell binding; and again, it wasn't exactly ADDING to the conversation in a relevant or meaningful way。 The last quarter or so of the book, though, was definitely more interesting。 I enjoyed hearing his perspective on the Trump presidency, as well as his thoughts on where the DOJ could/should head from here。I almost wish he'd waited a bit longer to release this book and spent a little more time on the current state of affairs, but I digress。 。。。more

There are some very interesting stories included in Comeys justification of his own actions under Trump。 He details his life and career up to that dinner in the Green room, doing a good job explaining why it is so important for the Justice Department to remain aloof and impartial。 Once he dips his dainty toe into the Trump swamp it gets harder。 His explanation of the Hillary Clinton debacle still rings hollow and we’ve heard his detailed descriptions of confronting Trump, sort of, and being fire There are some very interesting stories included in Comeys justification of his own actions under Trump。 He details his life and career up to that dinner in the Green room, doing a good job explaining why it is so important for the Justice Department to remain aloof and impartial。 Once he dips his dainty toe into the Trump swamp it gets harder。 His explanation of the Hillary Clinton debacle still rings hollow and we’ve heard his detailed descriptions of confronting Trump, sort of, and being fired。 I assume his book deal included a second manuscript and this is it。 Comey has a tendency to brush off negatives and polish the good stuff。 He reminds me of a skipping stone that only lands on what he wants to remember。 His healthy ego shines through his writing, as if he doth protest too much。 Now that Trump, Barr et all have receded its hard not to place some of the blame for his election at Comeys feet。 Hopefully Merrick Garland can repair most of the damage done by the swamp creatures。 。。。more

I really enjoyed the early chapters of this book。 Comey’s stories about the trials he handled as a US Attorney were interesting and incredibly entertaining。 The later chapters did not keep my attention as well。 Overall, an enjoyable book。

Listened/read this as an audiobook。 I enjoy James Comey's writing。 He's a good story teller。 Any man who's willing to say that he knows "Goodnight, Moon" by heart is clearly a good person。There was more about learning to save justice in the book than actually saving justice。 The last section covers Comey's thoughts on how exactly to save justice。 Comey learned to be as impartial as possible over the course of his career, but it's always a struggle to maintain that。 Especially in the recent cases Listened/read this as an audiobook。 I enjoy James Comey's writing。 He's a good story teller。 Any man who's willing to say that he knows "Goodnight, Moon" by heart is clearly a good person。There was more about learning to save justice in the book than actually saving justice。 The last section covers Comey's thoughts on how exactly to save justice。 Comey learned to be as impartial as possible over the course of his career, but it's always a struggle to maintain that。 Especially in the recent cases he had to handle that were inherently political。But if you're here for public policy on actually saving justice, if you're here for specifics, you'll be disappointed。Instead Comey treats you to in-depth write-ups of some of his cases both for the government and as a defense attorney。 He advocates both for the government and defense lawyers, having the experience to recognize why both are necessary。The Feds are supposed to hold themselves accountible (as their client is the lofty idea of "justice") but sometimes they don't, or sometimes they fail to。 The people who work for the FBI, the Main Justice Department, the Southern District of New York, all the way down to individual judges and police officers are human and sometimes screw up。 Comey goes in detail into some of his character flaws and mistakes he made and what he learned from them。There was a clear, honest, and really good effort for this book to be not full of dense legalese and jargon。 This effort was successful for the most part。 Comey at times lapses into almost defining his own jargon which is made of vernacular words which are used so specifically as to become more technical。 Comey's word choice as writer and tone as audiobook reader make this an easy, fast read。These lessons are good ones, but I bet the people who need them won't be reading。Recommended for: anyone who liked Comey's previous book, moderate Democrats, moderate Republicans, political junkies。 。。。more

I did not expect this book to be as good as it was。 James Comey is a great representation of what the American justice system should be。 It was so uplifting to hear about people actually fighting for the truth, and I nearly cried reading how Trump was able to take it down。 I wish more people in the legal system were like this。

I feel like this is 3。5 stars, but I’m rounding up because it’s important for national discourse。The first part of lessons learned by Comey during his time taking down the mafia was fascinating。 I could have listened to more about that and the process it takes to take down sophisticate crime syndicates。 I also liked hearing about his time as FBI director。There are some things that I felt made the book a bit weak - I feel like some explanations of all the positions within the federal government c I feel like this is 3。5 stars, but I’m rounding up because it’s important for national discourse。The first part of lessons learned by Comey during his time taking down the mafia was fascinating。 I could have listened to more about that and the process it takes to take down sophisticate crime syndicates。 I also liked hearing about his time as FBI director。There are some things that I felt made the book a bit weak - I feel like some explanations of all the positions within the federal government could have helped the average reader。 What is the difference between the attorney general and the director of the FBI? How do they work together and what is the history? I think it could have made the message of the book hit home harder。I also think it was hard to bridge the memoir-ish part of the book with the last part which was what steps should be taken to regain trust in the Justice Department。 And when Comey goes on to detail Flynn’s investigation and parts he personally didn’t have anything to do with, it came off a bit flat。 But I do appreciate Comey’s attempt to set the facts down for people to read。I didn’t read Higher Loyalty, but I loved listening to the audiobook of this one - narrated by Comey himself。 。。。more

Enjoyed it。 Read like a continuation of his first book。 I did enjoy the more in depth anecdotes from his career。 He doesn’t like Donald Trump and made sure to once again drive that point home。 I enjoy James Comey and his style of writing。 He doesn’t pander but gives his opinion and insight。 Reading this gives me a bit of (naive?) hope that there are people who seek to tell the truth for truths sake regardless of partisanship。

The first hand stories about some of the trials he was involved in are intriguing。 The decisions of some politicians are maddening。 His honesty and vulnerability make this book an easy read。

This was more of a memoire then I originally thought。 It wasn't bad, but I didn't feel like the title delivered what it promised。 The short stories do illuminate some of the nuances of justice and a lawyers role in making sure that it is served, no matter how minute it may feel at the moment。 My favorite short story was the one with the drughouse and the throwaway line about the money。 It illustrates just how important it is to make sure everyone gets a correct trial, where the evidence is corre This was more of a memoire then I originally thought。 It wasn't bad, but I didn't feel like the title delivered what it promised。 The short stories do illuminate some of the nuances of justice and a lawyers role in making sure that it is served, no matter how minute it may feel at the moment。 My favorite short story was the one with the drughouse and the throwaway line about the money。 It illustrates just how important it is to make sure everyone gets a correct trial, where the evidence is correct, even though it isn't of huge importance for the outcome of the case in general。 。。。more

Like many Democrats, I was so angry with James Comey for being the spoiler in the 2016 election。 I read his book that came out shortly after he was fired about his explanation for why he did what he did, and it actually gave me some comfort。 It was a good read。 This book, which I listen to, was really well written, and well done in explaining The whole idea of saving justice, and promoting truth over the plethora of lies that we have dealt with in the last four years。 There were a few times when Like many Democrats, I was so angry with James Comey for being the spoiler in the 2016 election。 I read his book that came out shortly after he was fired about his explanation for why he did what he did, and it actually gave me some comfort。 It was a good read。 This book, which I listen to, was really well written, and well done in explaining The whole idea of saving justice, and promoting truth over the plethora of lies that we have dealt with in the last four years。 There were a few times when I just belly over laughed at some of the ways he described things。 Tone is everything so the audio version I’m sure gives a better idea of what exactly he was thinking in a number of circumstances。 But my favorite reference was the giraffe in heat… You’ll have to read it to find out。 。。。more

Another thoughtful look at justice, trust and democracy in our country。 His expertise, care and respect for the rule of law is reassuring in these uneasy times。 His time prosecuting “La Cosa Nostra” in New York dovetails nicely with the “leadership” style of 45。I read Comey’s books back to back, there are a few occasions where stories are repeated。 I’d recommend giving some air between readings。 Our institutions are damaged right now, but nowhere nearly as managed as after Watergate。 Comey belie Another thoughtful look at justice, trust and democracy in our country。 His expertise, care and respect for the rule of law is reassuring in these uneasy times。 His time prosecuting “La Cosa Nostra” in New York dovetails nicely with the “leadership” style of 45。I read Comey’s books back to back, there are a few occasions where stories are repeated。 I’d recommend giving some air between readings。 Our institutions are damaged right now, but nowhere nearly as managed as after Watergate。 Comey believes the reservoir of trust can be restored, and I pray/believe he’s right。 。。。more
